Please note: At Sterling & Law, we don;t advise on defined benefit pensions.

Is a SIPP better than a personal pension?
Both SIPPs and personal pensions have their unique features and advantages. It is recommended that you seek specialist pension advice to determine which option is best suited to your specific needs and circumstances.
One advantage of SIPPs and personal pensions is that they can be transferred between each other, although personal pensions are typically transferred to SIPPs more frequently. From a tax standpoint, both types of pensions operate similarly, allowing for flexibility in receiving various contributions, including employer contributions.
That said, not all employers will contribute to a SIPP so it’s best to ask the questions first before making any decision.
What are your fees?
At Sterling & Law, we operate a transparent fee structure. Our fees for ongoing pension management are based on ‘funds under management’. This is a percentage of the value of your pension pot.
You can find out more by visiting our page covering our pension management fees.
Can I retire without a pension?
Yes, it is possible to retire without a pension.
Nevertheless, it may require significant savings and alternative retirement income sources such as personal investments, income from property, or government benefits.
It’s important to note that the government makes additional contributions to your pension, therefore, increasing the value of your pension each time you make ongoing contributions. This is called tax-relief and is one of the key benefits of investing in a pension when saving for your retirement years.
What’s happened to the Lifetime Allowance?
In the spring budget of 2023, the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, abolished the Lifetime Allowance creating the opportunity to significantly increase your pension pot.
Whilst we don’t know what the future holds, this presents a significant opportunity to take further advantage of this tax-efficient investment.
When should I start a pension?
Ideally, you should begin saving for your pension as early as possible.
Starting a pension at a young age provides the optimal opportunity to take advantage of the power of compound interest.
By making early contributions to your pension, you can fully leverage the benefits of compounding, which allows even small contributions made early on to potentially have a greater impact than larger contributions made later in life.
